I have always tended to nostalgia, it’s just something I do. Usually I think about people and the times in my life I knew them and the memories that are triggered accordingly. Recently tho’ brought on over the last few days owing to a long chat to my Dad and an email from Germany I have been thinking about places, ones that have some meaning for me that are now no longer there, at least not in the incarnation that they were when they were of significance to me. I decided to write them down in a last effort to preserve them for my own memory.

regentmilkbarext1.jpg
Firstly the Regent Milk Bar on the Edgware Road in Paddington, it was a place more part of my Dad’s past than my own but somewhere he did take me when we walked around Paddington after his Mother (my Grandmother, obviously!) died. We visited some of his old haunts and areas he knew and one of the places we went was the Regent. It was a step back into the 1950s which meant that it gave me a tangible connection to my Dad’s past as well. The place had always been run by Italians, just like a good ice cream parlour should be and the ice cream was thick and home made and slopped onto the cornet with a wide spatular. I think we went there a couple of times. It is now sadly deceased. (My Dad tells me it is at least immortalised by virtue of being the place that Gwyneth Paltrow gets her morning coffee from in Sliding Doors, amusingly enough that same film features a pub down by the Thames in Hammersmith called the Blue Anchor which is on the other side of the river to my school and in which I was a frequent visitor during my schooldays, it is in fact the pub in which I had been drinking after my last A level exam when I returned to school in the evening to find the housemaster waiting for me at which point I was expelled from the boarding house!) The Regent’s existence and lamented demise reminded me of a place that had that sort of link in my past the Ice Dream Parlour from what I recall had a similar style in 1950s decor, I don’t know if it was run by Italians, all I remember was that to a young boy on the King’s Road in the 1970s there was nowhere else you’d rather stop at. It was the height of the parental treat to go in there for a sundae one afternoon, glass bowls, banana splits, knickerbocker glory, I guess many people in the US may still have these sorts of things to look back on but here there weren’t that common to begin with and they are practically extinct now.

cafe-westphal-26.9.1993

In Berlin there is an area called Prenzlauer Berg, it is in the old East side and is full of imposing grey stone buildings that give an aura of now forgotten grandeur. I have always liked it there it is one of my favourite parts of Berlin and at the time when I was around there it wasn’t quite as trendy as it is now. Prenzl Berg was the area in the East where the Bohemians lived, the cafe society area but it had a more literary feel than Kreuzberg or Neukoelln which were similar type places on the Western side. There was a place on Kollwitzplatz called the Cafe Westphal, an outside that resembled a Czech milk bar I used to go to in the centre of Prague. I discovered the Westphal originally with my Ex who was living in Berlin briefly at the time when I was living in Rostock. The Westphal was a spacious cafe with engulfing sofas, a pleasant but quiet atmosphere and newspapers all over the place. The first time I was there I think I spent the whole day there! I went back some months later when in Berlin again with a group of friends and I took them there, we spent practically the whole day there as well including 2 of us nodding off entirely much to the mirth of the group who were sadly armed with cameras! I hasten to add this was because it was a day called ‘Herrntag’ (Men’s Day) and we’d been on the piss since 8am! The tea at the Westphal was good, the cafe warm and comfortable and importantly the prices low, I guess with its central location it was doomed. I hear the owner of the building put the rent up and that was that. It is now a trendy Italian restaurant, something for all the tourists but with none of the character of the original area. That makes me think that Prenzl Berg has probably already gone the way of Chelsea and Camden in London or Schwabing in Munich and other areas that were much more interesting before the commercial explosion.

Speaking of the commercial explosion I confess I was naive enough to think that one place that might be spared it was Lewisham, a place I spent many years around during my student days and for a few years thereafter. In around 1994 a pub opened on the High St. called the Quaggy Duck. This is before the vast array of Wetherspoons had fully taken over. The pub was generally not too busy, the beer was good and the interior varnished wood. I liked it immediately. I was back in Lewisham in September during the ESF looking for something to eat and I thought I’d like to pop into the Duck for a pint only to find that it is now the Marlow’s Wine Bar and upon further research it appears to have had another incarnation in between. I didn’t have the heart to go up Lee High Rd. to see if the Noodle Bar and the Coffee Shack and Howard’s Record Shop were still there. Maybe they were which would have given me a little solace but if not it would have been another area that had completely shaken off the parts of it that I knew. The 3 places I mention were not glossy commercial places although the Noodle bar and the Coffee Shak were perhaps symptomatic even then that Lewisham was undergoing a change from the previous days of transport caffs and Pie n Mash shops. I think the Marlows Wine Bar tells me more about modern Lewisham than I really wished to know. Sadly I couldn’t find any pictures of the Duck and so it’s memory remains only in my head and that of a select handful of others who may have passed thru’ it in it’s short history.

radiojackie.jpg
One thing that did amuse me tho’ as I drove back from my Dad’s was seeing a sign for Radio Jackie which used to be a pirate radio station I listened to in the late 70s to early 80s. It used to have its studios in the high st. of the place my Dad lived. “227 Radio Jackie, The Sound of South West London” went the jingle -ah that takes me back. The car stickers were everywhere including on my bedroom window. There was a big campaign to try to get it granted a license but I remember it was raided and closed down. I then started listening to all sorts of Radio stations after that mainly things like Radio Berlin Internation from East Berlin and Radio Moscow World Service and Radio Tirana which was suprisingly easy to pickup, I never understood why. Anyway I digress into nostalgia again, Radio Jackie is now back and legit and still using “The Sound of South West London” as its catchline and the same red RJ symbol . I listened to it on the way home and thought I was 12 again! If you’re interested at all, altho’ why should you be, Radio Jackie has a website here

[Redbaron responds – Ah the luxury you have John, sadly I have neither. It’s easy sometimes when you see loads of photos and especially video footage from the 60s and 70s to forget that in those days virtually no-one had a video camera and many did not have a camera. We take all these things for granted now and I try to take pictures of everything to ensure that nothing is lost forever should I ever need a memory.]

I had a blog lined up today so I am fucking annoyed that I am having to put a good rant at Britain on hold for a more important rant against the US again. Bastards, can’t they give me a break for 5 minutes to complain about something else?!

They’re bringing the big guns out now are they, now Colin Powell wades into the debate and refuses to accept the result of the election. Is he subject to a different set of information than the rest of us? I suspect not, he may be the only one in the current administration to know where Ukraine is but I bet he knows about as much about it as I do about Alabama.

I have heard some more information about the Ukrainian election, it appears that Yanukovitch’s heartlands in the East towards Russia were allegedly returning 96% for him in some districts and that this has raised alarm bells. Probably quite rightly 96% seems rather high and one would want to take a look. Just as one might want to take a look at the results in some of the Western provinces the heartlands of Yuschenko where many areas returned figures of 93% for the opposition leader, yet I’ve heard far less about that side of things than I have heard analogies to the old guard fiddling the way they did in the old days, it would appear it’s all back to the good old days of Uncle Joe in Kiev.

What galls me is where is this righteous indignation for Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma, where was this safeguarding of the democratic right of the people in Chile in 1972 or Nicaragua and the Sandinista government in the 1979? What about Vietnam or Hugo Chavez in Venezuela or the popular Cuban revolution in 1959? Is it just me or does it appear that the US is only ever interested in the will of the people if the will of the people happens to match the will of the American government? Would the furore about Ukraine be the same if it was the pro-Russian candidate who was disputing the result and the pro-European had been declared the winner? No, bollocks would it, they would say there were some irregularities and that would be it. Funnily enough the same as happened after the Zimbabwean election a couple of years ago where the opposition MDC were clamouring for international pressure and the election observers declared serious doubts about the legitimacy of the election result. Where was Colin Powell’s rectitude then?

And what of Iran? Britain, France and Germany have brokered a deal that the Iranians seem happy with but it requires the sanction of the US and yet the US choose in this moment to be stand-offish -at a time when they are up to their ears in Iraq with oil at $55 a barrel and set to rise if there is any trouble with Iran and the US telling us it wishes to make the world a safer place and yet now they want to give Iran the cold shoulder. Why would they want to do that? Perhaps because the nuclear program is of less interest then having a more pro-american regime in power in Tehran. You think I’m kidding? You think Condoleeza Rice is kidding…?

The Ukrainian opposition has been described (glowingly) as ‘made in America’. America does not allow foreign funding in its electoral process, so why should any other state. At the same time, the current Kuchma/Yakunovich govt is unsavoury, but that shouldn’t give a carte blanche to imperialism. They are clearly pro-capitalist and not Soviet leftovers as is alleged – they’re just looking to Russia rather than the West. As to Zimbabwe, I think many leftwingers should be a bit more careful about swallowing all the anti-Mugabe propaganda, which is skewed by the interests of the white elite. After all, the confiscated white farms were taken from blacks within living memory. I don’t think you can support either side.
Diogenes

[Redbaron responds – A well-thought out comment thanks. The Ukrainian situation is basically just down to the West being peeved the the Ukrainians don’t seem to be all gung-ho pro EU. As for Zimbabwe I agree entirely, I don’t like Mugabe and I don’t think he’s a left-winger and he is not feeding many of his people, but many of those that criticise him are coming from a very old-empire position.]

Funny really that Peter Hain, Leader of the Commons can use the above term to describe the government when it has been readily acknowledged for the last 7 years that Labour have stolen most of the domestic policy from the Conservatives. It is also ironic that Hain’s description comes on the day of the Security-themed Queen’s speech. This, overseas friends, is the time when the fatted cow (sorry, the Monarch to those lovers of quaint English pagentry) comes to the legislature amid much pomp and lunatic circumstance, and rather like the American president she then proceeds to read a speech written for her by those actually in power.

This Queen’s speech, which outlines the planned legislation for the next session of Parliament, is symptomatic of a repressive domestic policy agenda based around the over-accentuation of the culture of fear. This fear is centered around large almost pastiche figures of hatred -asylum seekers, economic migrants, benefit cheats, foreigners, muslims etc. etc. However increasingly the young and what is known as those guilty of ‘anti-social behaviour’ (This can be used to encompass anything, there is in fact an 80 -year old man who has been presented with an Anti Social Behaviour Order forbidding him from sarcasm!) What ASBOs do NOT do is address any of the actual underlying causes of the problems – the collapse of a socially cohesive society, the lack of educational, vocational, social and economic opportunities. The money raised from ASBOs does not go on building community centres, youth clubs, community cinemas, children’s parks and therefore how can it be viewed as being a balanced situation. It is the same as the transport problem where the road tax and speeding fines and toll road revenues is not being spent on an integrated public transport alternative. Hence the mess that public transport is in here and the lack of social cohesion in towns cities and increasingly in villages. I mean what is the ASBO expected to achieve, are we striving for the Victorian values of children being seen but not heard, and presumably that should apply to certain adults that the community doesn’t like as well, acerbic people, lefties, the ‘great unwashed’, anyone with a bit of dissent about them really, for what we are seemingly aiming for is a homogenous society in which everybody is to assimilate to someone’s idea of a norm and where nobody speaks when out of their house and critcism is strictly forbidden.

So the new vogue is for ID cards, I say ‘new’ vogue, they’ve been trying it for years, but now they are tacking it to the hysteria about terrorism. They would have us believe that if we had these biometric cards Britain would be safe as houses and yet it would not be a dint to civil liberties. How the fuck does that stack up? I mean France and Spain have ID cards and yet ETA have been operating for years, furthermore the Madrid bombing wasn’t stopped either. Germany also has ID cards and yet the Lockerbie bombing was planned and instigated from Germany. Frankly this isn’t even a half-concealed attempt at immigration repression. They want the ID cards to control access to the NHS, state benefits, public services etc. The fact is that at the heart of this is the arrogant assumption that no-one British could really be responsible for these sorts of things, also that anyone genuinely ‘allowed’ to be here must have been vetted enough, so it must be Johnny Foreigner. I am always very wary of there being a storage facility for information that transcends simple name and address stuff. The biometric data on the ID card will potentially have all manner of things such as physical appearance details as well as fingerprints and retinal scans – this is supposed to be a security feature. In a country that can’t even do a secret ballot using pieces of paper with a cross on them I fail to be convinced that this biometric data will always be a benign little piece of plastic in my pocket. That is of course provided I get offered one. Being currently stateless I may be regarded as Johnny Foreigner too, and a commie to boot – Ivan Foreigner! So maybe finally I’ll get the validation of my non-Britishness after all and perhaps I’ll have a warm feeling as I board the ferry bound for Rosslare where on arrival everyone is going to take the piss out of my accent!

“Britain is Working” claim Labour in their post Queen’s speech broadcast, but working for whom eh? After all manufacturing is dead, call centres are on the way out, there’s no mining anymore so what are we all doing? You’ll forgive me if images of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis spring to mind, I’ve commuted into London -I’ve seen the late 20th century version as well as the original!

“The United States is deeply concerned over the elections in Ukraine…

“Should, in the final analysis, this election prove to be fundamentally flawed and tarnished, we would certainly need to review our relations with the Ukraine and consider further steps against individuals who had engaged in fraud.”

“This is not a question about support for one candidate or another candidate. This is a question about support for the democratic process – for people to be able, without intimidation or harassment or the threat of violence, to freely express their opinion and for that opinion to be accorded its due weight in a fair and transparent process. That up till now has not happened in the Ukraine…”

US state department spokesman Adam Ereli

“It is now apparent that a concerted and forceful programme of election-day fraud and abuse was enacted with either the leadership or co-operation of governmental authorities.

“I believe that President Kuchma has the responsibility and the opportunity for producing, even at this point, an outcome which is fair and responsible.”

US Senator Richard Lugar, chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, I saw those and then the title of my blog sprang to mind. So what we have here is a case of “Do as we say, not as we do.”

Regardless of the actualities of the election in the Ukraine I really hope that Viktor Yanukovych tells the US to ‘fuck off’ after all he’s the pro-Russia candidate so wtf does he care what the bloody Yanquis think anyway?!

[Staccato] And..It..Ain’t..Me..Who’s..Gonna..Leave!

At one time this was the scariest man in the world. Anyone watching Top Of The Pops around the late 70s early 80s will remember it as something of a Dr Who experience. Ron’s brother Russell was the lead singer of the group, Russell had that rather maniacal look as if to say of his brother ‘I know he’s completely mad but he’s simply too strong for me’. They were all in on it the adults, I don’t remember my Dad saying ‘this is scary stuff son let’s watch One Man and his Dog’. Furthermore the TOTP camera crew played the supporting role with side on shot after side on shot flashing up with Ron Mael and his ‘I’m coming to get you’ look. He was coming to get us and we were powerless to stop him. It was transfixing in the same way that Dr Who was, you couldn’t like go to your room to have a play or something or change channels because it was just compulsive viewing. It’s probably what put me off horror films!

Nowadays Ron Mael has settled down and given up his ambition of World domination and eating children. Sparks still perform as a group.

This was of course something of a surprise. I would not like to play down my linguistic abilities but I was unaware of such a prowess in Madarin!

Song Of The Day – OMD ~ Enola Gay

30 children in an orphanage in Nicaragua saved their pocket money and donated it to the BBCs Children in Need program, they raised £1.

children_in_need_logo.gif

I thought that was one of the most touching things I had ever heard. It made my eyes a bit bloody misty I can tell you. It also gave a little lift to my faith in humanity. It takes children to show us what is important because they know and are not tainted with the material greed or desire to be cool that we have as adults.

It also reminded me of the time when my daughter was born, there were some Kosovan refugees at my Mother’s church. My Mother, proud Grandmother as she was of course, was going round telling people about the birth of her Granddaughter. The Kosovans spoke to my Mother and told her that in Kosovo it is customary to give money upon the birth of a child, as they had no money they gave the only thing they could which was one of their £5 Food Vouchers that they received instead of benefits. My Mother was obviously very moved by this but replied quite rightly that I would not wish them to give anything when they already had so little. They insisted as a matter of pride and my Mother took the gift and when she next came she gave it to me. I kept it as I will always keep it to remind me that when the chips are down people are inherently good and do look after one another no matter what sort of hardship they are faced with. It has also been one of the driving factors behind my desire to see an end to the fortress mentality of our borders and immigration restrictions. I can do little more for these people but it would be quite wrong of me to do any less.

Ho ho ho -yes indeed, you always you you must be on the correct track when the right start getting annoyed with you. I got a citation on Tuesday here. Apparently it is precisely people like me that is why the Left are not getting elected in the US. That amused me greatly that did because if I didn’t have delusions of grandeur before I think I might decide to have some now! Anyway since he has kindly introduced all his right-wing friends to me and as they say no publicity is bad publicity I thought it only fair to repay the debt.

This is of course the result of being in the hot blogs list and perhaps also a little to do with me having gone fascho-baiting the other day, well I was bored and ill and I felt like stirring up some shit and it didn’t take me long to find a very stinky pile of it here. The whole blog was pretty offensive but the entry about the death of Yassr Arafat and especially some of the comments was the most staggering and to be honest it would have been criminal not to have left a comment.

What I find interesting is that I am not over-confident in my debating ability nor my grasp of socio-political and economic history and yet to actually get these people to respond and have a genuine discussion about things seems impossible. I mean I don’t want to be presumtuous but whenever someone shys from debate it casts serious questions as to the validity of their argument, of course I am happy to listen to any rebuttal of this and debate it properly. I like nothing more than a good verbal punch up about politics, but the key is that I don’t feel the need to resort to insults and I won’t tolerate anyone else doing so. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again you have the right to your opinion provided it is researched and informed and not intolerant of that same right in others. The trouble is almost without exception the only people I know that conform to that principle are on the left.

And Now The Top 10

10. The The – Soul Mining

Whilst it shows its age a little now some 20 years on this was the album that launched me into an enduring love affair with the music of Matt Johnson who was and is the main protagonist behind The The. Soul Mining is the perfect angst music for teenagers the lyrics are fraught with feeling and a combination of hurt, anger and fear. It was also the first small step in my questioning society and my place in it. “I’m just a symptom of the moral decay that’s knawing out the heart of the country”

9. Deacon Blue – Raintown

For those who don’t know this album it may be an obscure choice but those who do know it will understand why it’s there. It’s something of a recurring theme these albums that go back to that time when I was between 16-19 but I guess that is an important time musically. Raintown was I think the first album I ever bought devoid of peer pressure, no-one else had heard of it and I only knew of it fro having seen one of those late night music shows that tend to feature alternative artists.

8. U2 -Achtung Baby

When I first heard Achtung Baby I thought it was shite apart from The Fly. It was the first and I think to date the only album I had actually bought on the first day of release. It came after a long wait and I had listened to The Joshua Tree and Rattle & Hum incessantly despite it constantly reminding me of my first love. 1990-1 were years that I had spent time in Berlin (East & West) and acquired a fascination of Trabants as well as the mystique of the city itself, so I felt that U2 had developed at the same time and in the same place as I had. Gradually the songs began to grow on me until I regarded it as one of the best U2 albums.

7. Kraftwerk – Trans Europe Express

I remember hearing this when it first came out in 1977 when the guy my Ma was going out with was into this new phenomenon that was computerised electronic music, centred very much around the Düsseldorf scene. To me I was too young to realise how it sounded like nothing really heard before but when I got older I sought out the album again and it is still somewhat ahead of its time. If anybody tries to tell you that modern day electronic music came from anything other than Kraftwerk then they’re talking out of their arse!

6. Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon (20th Anniversary Vinyl Pressing)

I don’t wish to ponce about eulogising about Dark Side because many emminently more qualified have done so before me. I have not run it in tandem to the Wizard of Oz nor do I wish to! To me is is the embodiment of that 70s rock scene that had moved on from the hope, love and optimism of the 60s into a more bland, brown and grey depressing world that we lived in then.

5. Led Zeppelin – The Unnamed Album (Symbols, IV, ZOSO)

The unnamed album is a well-known classic including Stairway To Heaven which is perhaps the most famous Zeppelin single that never was. I always found the backcover for me was in many ways a view I will always have of London it could not be anywhere else to anyone who’s lived there for any time. The Zeppelin influence had moved into a polarised mode with Jimmy Page’s Blues and Robert Plant’s Folk.

4. The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

A more obvious choice but it’s a classic. The Beatles may be considered to be the epitomy of establishment now what with the accession of ‘Sir Paul’ to the status of Mr status quo but back in the days Sgt pepper was the psychadelic album and judged on its own merits it is well worth its place in the top 10.

3. The The – Infected

So many of the albums I chose go back to things I listened to at that crucial time in my life between 15-19 and this is one of the most crucial. After the angst of Soul Mining Matt Johnson delivered an album with considerably more bite in Infected. This was the album that started to awaken my interest in serious politics, songs like ‘Heartland’ which is the most damming indictment of Thatcher’s Britain that there is in music, ‘Angel of Deception’ which began to draw up the battle lines between America’s global dominance and those of us left who saw it and disagreed with it.

2. U2 – The Joshua Tree

Another throwback to my teenage years this is just a classic pop music album, I could venture that it is the classic pop music album -it is for me anyway. With or Without You is for me the finest song U2 ever did and they did many great tracks but the album has much more than that and the U2 B-sides of the times show an increasing awareness of the global political scene.

Drumroll please….. here it is the Baron’s No. 1

1. Led Zeppelin I

The absolute finest album ever, I thought I would have to agonise for ages before picking the No. 1 but actually it was comparatively simple. Led Zeppelin I has Rock, Blues and the first signs of what was to be a strong folk influence. This album can be traced as the birth of heavy metal due to ‘Communicaation Breakdown’ and that could be seen as grounds enough for the top spot. This really is one of the only albums that no matter how many times I listen to it I can still listen to the whole thing without the urge to fast forward anything. I mean Dazed and Confused, Your Time is Gonna Come, How Many More Times there is no other band that can come up with that quality as a debut album. Other Zeppelin albums are fantastic but all of them will be measured against this one.

I still think Abbey Road is the best of the Beatles albums. I think agree with you on Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree, though…their best. Although I do feel pretty sad that they’re hawking iPod now…what happened to the boys of “Sunday Bloody Sunday”? Damn, it sucks to get old.
Kristie [kristiesgu@gmail.com]

[Redbaron responds – Abbey Road is a quality album without question and one I remember very much listening to in my bedroom when my Ma had it on the stereo. But Sgt Pepper had more impact on me personally so that’s why Abbey Road is only no 16.]

I know about half the albums on the list (maybe I can be forgiven for that since I wasn’t so much hearing albums when the came out in 1977 as I was being born in ’77?), and like all of those, so I guess I’m going to have to check out the others.
I teach an introductory music class, and I slip in two of these albums–always Zeppelin I and often Dark Side. I use Abbey Road for the Beatles. My high school students, in general, are just so unaware of anything that happened before, say, the mid-90s, that I feel a certain duty to introduce them to stuff they missed. For that matter, of course it’s stuff that I missed the first time around!

[Redbaron responds – Well done you John, it would otherwise be like me ignoring RocknRoll and the Blues. The beauty of almost all the albums on my list is that because they are old they are now cheap! What always irritated me was when the cover versions came out by these assanine idiots and the kids think it’s original. Same with samples on dance tracks, I mean they’ve even started covering Stevie Winwood for Christ sake, I mean Stevie Winwood and club smash wouldn’t normally trip off the tongue!]

Your mention of covers reminded me… I was a big fan of Queen, once upon a time, and knowing this one of my friends was like “Hey, I just got this Metallica CD where they cover a Queen song!” He played it for me and it sounded pretty much like Queen’s version, only with a different vocalist. When I played Queen’s version for him, he couldn’t believe Queen could be that heavy. *Sigh*–no sense of history. 😉

Love the list. I’ll be doing one of my own, I think. I’d have rated Physical Graffiti as the best Zeppelin album. That’s the one that I grooved my 1st copy of.
I’m familiar with Kraftwerk. KSHE-95 fm played several of their songs, and you can still catch them on the Sunday morning classics show.

I thought I’d post this for those who haven’t seen it already:

NOTICE OF REVOCATION OF INDEPENDENCE TO CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

In light of your failure to make the correct decision in electing your President, thus showing you to be unfit to govern yourselves, we hereby give you notice of the revocation of your independence effective as of Monday 15th November 2004.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories. Except Utah, which she doesn’t much fancy, and is frankly a bit dodgy.

Your new Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Tony Blair M.P. (for the 97.85% of you unaware of the outside world), will appoint a Minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire will be circulated in twelve months time to determine if any of you noticed.

To aid your transition into a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

All citizens are to look up “revocation” in the Oxford English Dictionary. While there, check the pronunciation guide for “aluminium” – this may be surprising for you. Generally attempt to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up “vocabulary”. Using the same 27 words interspersed with “like” and “you know” is an unacceptable form of communication. NB. Look up “interspersed”.

There is no such thing as “U.S. English”. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf.

Learn to distinguish between British and Australian accents. It’s not difficult.

Hollywood will henceforth be required to occasionally cast Englishmen as good guys.

Re-learn your original anthem, “God Save the Queen”. Please ensure that you have complied with the first law before attempting this.

Stop playing American “football”. There is only one kind of “football”. What you refer to as “football” is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you aware of a world outside of your borders may have noticed that no one else plays it. Play proper football instead; to start with get the girls to help you – it is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, eventually, be allowed to play rugby, which is similar to American “football”, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies.

Declare war on Quebec and France, using nukes if they give you any merde. The 97.85% of you unaware of the outside world should count yourselves lucky – the Russians have never really been bad guys.
NB. “Merde” is French for “sh*t”.

4th July is no longer a public holiday. 15th November will be the new national holiday.

American cars are hereby banned. They are crap; its for your own good. When we show you German and Japanese cars you’ll understand.

Please tell us who killed JFK. Its been driving us crazy.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION.

Heh! The rules are still a bit gray to me…or is that “grey?” What’s in a color…I mean colour (got to get those spellings correct) anyway. You know us Americans…always stirring things up for the past 200 plus years!
Isn’t that strange though, that people in the United States are the only ones referred to as “Americans” when people in Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Panama, etc., are residents on the continents of America too? I’ve always thought of them as Americans because of that…so to make it clear I guess it is easier to call us Americans instead of United Statesans. How about just Cheeky Buggers if RB has his way! Heh!
