[Staccato] And..It..Ain’t..Me..Who’s..Gonna..Leave!

At one time this was the scariest man in the world. Anyone watching Top Of The Pops around the late 70s early 80s will remember it as something of a Dr Who experience. Ron’s brother Russell was the lead singer of the group, Russell had that rather maniacal look as if to say of his brother ‘I know he’s completely mad but he’s simply too strong for me’. They were all in on it the adults, I don’t remember my Dad saying ‘this is scary stuff son let’s watch One Man and his Dog’. Furthermore the TOTP camera crew played the supporting role with side on shot after side on shot flashing up with Ron Mael and his ‘I’m coming to get you’ look. He was coming to get us and we were powerless to stop him. It was transfixing in the same way that Dr Who was, you couldn’t like go to your room to have a play or something or change channels because it was just compulsive viewing. It’s probably what put me off horror films!

Nowadays Ron Mael has settled down and given up his ambition of World domination and eating children. Sparks still perform as a group.
